SAMPLE 1

Four couples are taking a cruise for their wedding anniversaries. They have been married for 1 year, 15 years, 20 years and 30 years.

(1) Jim has been married for less than 20 years.
(2) Dan has not been married for 20 years.
(3) Amanda has been married for 1 year.
(4) Bob and Kate are married.
(5) Amy has been married longer than Dave.
(6) Kate has not been married for 20 years.

Step 1:

Start by placing the easy assumptions, here numbers (3) and (4). By clicking on the "submit" button, you can lock this information in place. This allows you to more easily see the information you are sure about by showing it in green.
length Bob Kate
1 year man Amanda
length man woman
length man woman

Step 2:

The puzzle’s introduction indicates that the marriages lasted 1 year, 15 years, 20 years and 30 years. Swap lines 1 and 2 by clicking on the arrow next to them so that the information "1 year – Amanda" is on the first line. By arranging the known information in order, it’s easier to figure out the rest of the puzzle.
1 year man Amanda
length Bob Kate
length man woman
length man woman

Step 3:

Jim and Dan have not been married for 20 years (1 & 2). Additionally, Kate is married to Bob (step 1) and Kate hasn’t been married for 20 years (6). So, the man who has been married for 20 years cannot be Jim, Dan, or Bob. Therefore, it must be the fourth man: Dave.
1 year man Amanda
length Bob Kate
20 years Dave woman
length man woman

Step 4:

Amy has been married longer than Dave (5). Since he has been married for 20 years (step 3) and the lengths of the marriages are 1 year, 15 years, 20 years, and 30 years, you can deduce that Amy has been married for 30 years.
1 year man Amanda
length Bob Kate
20 years Dave woman
30 years man Amy

Step 5:

In the column for length and the column for women, there is only one choice left. All you need to do is click on it to make the missing value appear. Thus we discover that Bob and Kate have been married for 15 years and that Dave has been married for 20 years to Jen.
1 year man Amanda
15 years Bob Kate
20 years Dave Jen
30 years man Amy

Step 6:

Jim has been married for less than 20 years (1). Therefore, he cannot be married to Amy, and thus has been married to Amanda for one year.
1 year Jim Amanda
15 years Bob Kate
20 years Dave Jen
30 years man Amy

Step 7:

Finally, the only thing left is to discover who Amy’s husband is by clicking on the corresponding box: it’s Dan!
1 year Jim Amanda
15 years Bob Kate
20 years Dave Jen
30 years Dan Amy
